Written in July 2000 for the Los Angeles Fan Fest, this filk of Don McLean's "American Pie" salutes the real heroes of Lois and Clark. Rated G. Very vague spoilers for all seasons.

The filk was performed at LAFF 2000 on my behalf by Laurie and Kristin, whom I thank most warmly. :) For those of you who are interested in such things, the scansion for the verses and chorus follows the first, second, third, and final stanzas of Don McLean's original "American Pie." Accept no substitutes. Don't even think of listening to Madonna's.

Superman Pie

~ cue music ~

A long, long time ago,
On a planet far away,
Jor-El and Lara had a son.
But they discovered Krypton's core
Destabilizing more and more
And knew the ending of their world had come.

They quickly made a little spaceship,
Checked the probes to find a safe trip,
At last they found one of worth:
A little planet called Earth.
And as red Krypton was destroyed,
They sent Kal-El into the void
The Kents found him, were overjoyed
And there it all began...

Oh, my, my, this here Superman guy,
Fools the masses
With some glasses
And a bright-patterned tie,
He left his world before the planet could die
Sent away to find a home where he'd fly,
Away to find a home where he'd fly.

Jon and Martha took him home
To raise him as their very own
Though they didn't know his origin
They named him Clark and watched him grow
Till all of Smallville came to know
This charmer with the devasting grin
But his powers soon grew manifest
And while Mom and Dad tried their best
They simply couldn't say
Why their baby turned out this way
Oh, his journeys were continuous
Till he came to Metropolis
And there he met up with Lois
And that's how it began...

He was singin', My, my, this here Superman guy,
Fools the masses
With some glasses
And a bright-patterned tie,
He left his world before the planet could die
Sent away to find a home where he'd fly,
Sent away to find a home where he'd fly.

Poor Clark did not know what to do:
He'd made a triangle for two
Lois loved his supersuit.
He had to deal with things complex
Like Kryptonite and evil Lex
His unrequited love was almost moot...
But then he realized something strange --
The PTB had made a change!
They finally had a first date
And things worked out just great
And even though she slammed the door,
Their love just blossomed more and more
Till he proposed and she upped the score!
That's how it began...

They were singin', My, my, this here Superman guy,
Fools the masses
With some glasses
And a bright-patterned tie,
He left his world before the planet could die
Sent away to find a home where he'd fly,
Sent away to find a home where he'd fly.

Now that Lois knew the truth,
They struggled, fighting arcs uncouth
Until they married 'neath the sky.
It seemed as if their tale would
Continue on, just as it should
But villains planned to make their story die...
But yet the two did not despair;
There still remained a hopeful air
As new heroes arose
To drive away their woes.
And the duo I admire most
Are perpetuated in every post
Yes, fanfic writers deserve a toast
For how it all began...

We were singin', My, my, this here Superman guy,
Fools the masses
With some glasses
And a bright-patterned tie,
He left his world before the planet could die
Sent away to find a home where he'd fly,
Sent away to find a home where he'd fly.

We were singin', My, my, this here Superman guy,
Fools the masses
With some glasses
And a bright-patterned tie,
He left his world before the planet could die
Sent away to find a home where he'd fly.
